Leader of the Accompong Maroons, Chief Richard Currie, has categorically rejected claims by Prime Minister Andrew Holness that Jamaica is a unitary state, arguing in the process, that Jamaica “begged” for independence from Britain, while the “Maroons waged war to maintain theirs”.
Currie was responding to Holness who asserted on Sunday morning that there is no other sovereign authority in Jamaica other than the Government of Jamaica that was duly elected by the people to govern the country.
“Jamaica is a unitary sovereign state. There is no other sovereign authority in Jamaica other than the Government of Jamaica. I want that to be absolutely clear! None!” thundered Holness in response to a question about whether there is conflict in a stated position of the Government not to engage with or fund any initiative of any group that is claiming self-government status.
“… Under my leadership, not one inch of Jamaica will come under any other sovereign authority,” he said with his voice deepening further.
A recent report indicated that Jamaican Government ministries, departments and agencies have were urged not to engage with or fund secessionist Maroons who are asserting sovereignty from the Jamaican state. The report cited a leaked Cabinet Office document.
“There must be no acceptance of, or acquiescence to, any language or suggestion regarding sovereignty or indigenous rights, and no funds must be placed at the disposal of any person or entity claiming such,” said the document, as was carried in the media report.
In answering whether the Government would reconsider its stance, Holness became even more incensed by the talk, which he labelled as being tantamount to the Jamaican State funding a group of people purporting to be part of another sovereign state within Jamaica.
“What you are asking would be for the Government of Jamaica to fund, (or) to take taxpayers’ money and fund another government (inside Jamaica).
“This is not another government saying they are a Local Government, (formerly) a Parish Council, which is under our constitution,” argued Holness.
“Are you crazy? Really? Do you know what you are asking?” quizzed a riled up Holness in reference to the journalist who posed the question.
In an even more angry tone and language, Holness took what appeared to be a jab at the media house representative for the question of funding to another group of people who claim to be sovereign.

“This is the stuff of how guerrilla wars come and states break down! Wake up Jamaica! Don’t court foolishness and problems! Wake up!
“People have died as a result, and you expect me to stand here as prime minister and fund activities that could lead to the breakdown of our state? Never!” stated Holness.
Hours later, Currie fired back on an Instagram live video on Sunday night, in which he contended that, “Jamaica is not a unitary sovereign state”.
Instead, he claimed that, “(Queen) Elizabeth II, of the House (of) Windsor, is your Queen and Sovereign. Jamaica is simply fully responsible in (Queen) Elizabeth’s Commonwealth.”
Further, the Maroon chief labelled the Jamaican Government as being basically a “professional beggar”.
“The Jamaican Government is a professional at begging the world. We are selling out our natural resources, (and) we are selling out our lands,” declared Currie.
“These are regular day to day conversations that permeate the island, as the Government does not own its roads nor its air space, among many other things, which is why Maroons will not subject themselves to a municipality, because Mr Holness and his cronies will try to take away our ancestral estate, the Cockpit Country, and sell it to the highest bidder,” he continued.
Currie further said if Jamaicans choose to understand their true history and stop labelling the Maroons as traitors, “then the truth will be able to surface for the multitudes to see.
